  4.     Jazz musician Billy Tipton never gave his Social Security
  5. number to his booking agent. He never went swimming with his
  6. three adopted sons. Though he became seriously ill, he never
  7. visited a doctor. Last week, four days after Tipton, 74, died
  8. from a bleeding ulcer in Spokane, a funeral director told one of
  9. the musician's sons the reason for his odd behavior: Tipton was
  10. a woman.

  12.     A gifted pianist and saxophonist, Tipton apparently began
  13. his sexual masquerade during the Big Band era of the 1930s,
  14. when women sang but were seldom allowed to play instruments. "He
  15. gave up everything," said Kitty Oakes, the woman Tipton claimed
  16. was his wife for 19 years. "There were certain rules and
  17. regulations in those days if you were going to be a musician."
  18. Musicians who played with Tipton would remark on his youthful
  19. appearance, but never suspected his ruse. "Mentally he was a
  20. father," said one son, Scott Miller. "He was always there for
  21. us."
